A rowboat was paddled out to meet our ship. It carried a light throwing rope that was thrown accurately to Panama Canal workers on our ship who used that light throwing rope to pull the heavy steel cable over from the mule.

The watertight gates were the ones nearest to the camera. An inner set was used to filter debris to prevent fouling of the main gates.

The Lock Drained

The lock drained. Notice that the mule was no longer attached to the ship. It was detached because the ship was tied to the lock wall using lines. That way the mule could return for the next ship, and another mule would take its place.
